Sebring serves as the county seat for Highlands County government. The unincorporated area of Highlands County is governed by a five-member, elected at large, Board of County Commissioners who serve staggered four-year terms and represent five geographic districts.
A County Administrator is employed to handle the administrative affairs of the county and supervise a professional administrative and operations staff.
The Highlands County Sheriff’s Department is the chief law enforcement agency for the county, with each of the three municipalities having their own police department.
The three incorporated municipalities in Highlands County include the City of Avon Park, the City of Sebring, and the Town of Lake Placid, each of whom are governed by an elected mayor and council.
